Communities of area 18 in Lilongwe can now forget a bit of the trauma they have through following a court ruling that has sided with them.
The residents, three years ago, consumed water contaminated with human excreta, and this was blamed on the Lilongwe City Council.
The development persuaded them to sue the council, and the matter has been paraded in the High Court, where long at last, ruling has been made yesterday.
The court has commanded Lilongwe City Council and Malawi Housing Corporation to compensate the residents, but the actual package has not been revealed yet.
Lawyer representing the people Gift Nankhuni has expressed delight over the judgement, saying justice has prevailed.
“I am happy now that long at last, justice has seen its course. The people deserve better,” explained Nankhuni.
The people, 1,300 in total, in their parade, wanted to be compensated with a whooping four million kwacha each.
The incident happened in July, 2017.
