Three girls have died yesterday in Ntchisi district after a cave in which they were tapping soil in collapsed, killing them in the process, Akometsi can confirm.
According to the district’s police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Richard Kaponda, the incident happened in Chisuwasuwa village, T/A Chikho at a place called Palamombo.
The three victims have been identified as Monica Yohane aged 13, Chimwemwe Mpatso, 12, and Egrina Shaba aged 13.
Kaponda said the three went to the stream to extract clay soil in a cave to beautify their mud houses.
“As police, we can confirm the news. The man-made cave collapsed while the girls were inside extracting the soil, killing them in the process,” Kaponda revealed.
The police mouthpiece further said medical staff from Ntchisi District Hospital together with them [police] visited the scene, and postmortem conducted revealed that death was due to suffocation and internal injuries.
The police are therefore advising people to avoid doing such exercises so as to prevent some controllable deaths.
