Democratic Progressive Party members of parliament have elected Kondwani Nankhumwa as the Leader of Opposition in the house. The voting process was presided over by General Secretary of the Party, Grezelder Jeffrey.
Previously, former head of state and leader of DPP, Prof Peter Mutharika appointed member of parliament for Nsanje Central Francis Kasaila to take the position. However, his choice was refuted in parliament as it was indicated that leader of Opposition is not appointed but rather elected.
Nankhumwa has retained his position with 38 votes while his opponents Francis Kasaila got 4 votes and Bright Maska got 1 vote. 43 DPP members of parliament participated in the vote. Office of the Speaker is expected to announce the official results.
This comes at a time leadership trouble has been blowing up inside the party ever since losing the presidential election in May. APM leadership is being tested as members are leaning against his directives at the moment.
