Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Patricia Kaliati, has ordered closure of 124 unregistered Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Blantyre.
Kaliati has ordered Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) Board of Malawi to close the NGOs saying they are benefiting from the residents.
The remarks were made in Blantyre when she addressed chairpersons and secretaries drawn from 11 Area Development Committees (ADCs) in the district. The ADC members had been brought together to be trained by the NGO Board of Malawi so that they are able to help the state agency in policing unscrupulous NGOs.
According to the board, there are about 356 NGOs in Blantyre but only about 232 are registered.Kaliati fumed over the unregistered 124organizations, vowing that she would not allow them to continue eluding government and duping unsuspecting residents.
” Government will continue to support the NGO Board in its quest for an accountable and transparent NGO sector.” Pledged the Minister.
