Malawi’s former head of state professor Peter A Mutharika will receive a peace award from Uhuru/Raila Peace Accord honorary award at the 5th London Political Summit and Awards 2020 ceremony. The Uhuru/Raila peace award recognizes African leaders who have promoted peace, democracy and are politically tolerance. The award was created in 2018 by London political summit following the conflict that resulted from the Kenyan 2017 general elections.
Mutharika who has been hailed as democratic by many, is expected to share his mind on socio-economic consequences of globalization in view of COVID-19 and post Brexit relations with Africa. Chairperson of the summit Pauline Long cited that Mutharika’s presence and contribution to the virtual summit will address these consequences.
Mutharika has been honored as a man of peace following the historic fresh presidential election ordered by the constitutional court that were held on June 23, 2020 which saw Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima emerging winners. The peaceful transition of peace that Malawi just experienced has been one of the highlight and beacon of hope in African politics considering everything that preceded the presidential election.
