About 20 learners at Mazembe primary school are reportedly battling for their lives at Nkhatabay district hospital after lightening stroke them while learning under a tree.

Information akometsi have gathered indicates that, due to shortage of classrooms at the school, more learners learn under trees.

Corona virus preventive measures which among others include social distancing of about 2 metres is said to have worsened the crisis at the school as more streams of learners are forced to converge under trees.

The situation is in conflict with the precautionary measures from the department of metrology which among others cautions against sitting under trees during rainy season.

“But then, we still have to continue teaching under the trees despite the risk,” complained Gabriel Mankhwa, teacher at the school.

He added: “but, because the rains have began, learners must brace for more class suspensions. We don’t have option.”

Meanwhile, no death has been reported but reports indicate that most learners have sustained grave injuries.
