Housemaid convicted and ordered to serve a 30 months jail for theft by servant

The Chisenjere First Grade Magistrate Court in Blantyre has sentenced Agnes Bicycle to 30 months IHL for the offence of theft by servant which took place at M’dala village on 2 September, 2020.

According to Prosecutor Inspector Grace Kanjiwa of Chileka Police, Mrs Getrude Mandala who is from M’dala Village, employed Agnes Bicycle as a house maid.

On the said date, Mandala paid Bicycle her first month salary and ordered her to go to the maize mill.

She then left for other duties.

When coming back in the evening, she found that the gate was locked.

After asking neigbours, she was told that Bicycle left in the morning and did not come back.

Then they opened the gate and found that various properties which included clothes, shoes, cooking utensils, bags of maize and many others wealth over k700,000 were stolen.

The matter was refered to Police and Bicycle was arrested.

Some properties were immediately recovered and she was taken to court where she pleaded guilty to the charge and sentenced to 30 months IHL.

Bicycle who is 38 years old, comes from Sampha Village, in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimombo in Nsanje District.
