Vice president Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima has instructed ESCOM to stop buying fuel for Aggreko as the activity does not make economic sense.
Writing on his Facebook page, Chilima said he chaired a meeting for ESCOM, EGENCO, MERA, and the Ministry of Energy and Public Reforms where they agreed that ESCOM should, within 30 days, stop buying diesel for Agrekko to provide power using generators.
“We have given ESCOM 30 days to resolve with Agrekko. It does not make any economic sense for ESCOM to be buying fuel to supply to Aggreko and then the same Agrekko sells power to ESCOM using the same fuel provided”, wrote Chilima.
He further revealed that when all the disputes are over the focus will be on maintaining stable power supply and also improved within the projected time limit.
“After resolving these outstanding issues, what remains now is to put down a two year joint roadmap between ESCOM and EGENCO that will ensure that the stable power supply is maintained or improved with surplus within the stipulated two-year frame”, said Chilima
ESCOM and EGENCO have had financial and asset disputes for some time making them fail to deliver their services effectively.
