The country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima today held a one-on-one meeting with the Minister of Transport and Public works, Sidik Mia, as the veep continues championing Public Reforms.
Writing on his Facebook page, Chilima said this marks his milestone much as engaging Cabinet Ministers to motivate them and obtain a buy-in on the exercise.
On the same, the veep revealed his interest in investing in rail transport.
“…of particular interest to me was to understand the progress that has been made to improve the rail transport sector including metro and intercity lines”
However, it was disappointing to note that the quick wins that were obtained at the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) have backtracked,” reads part of the post.
He is also quoted as saying “this has seen the congestion that was nearly eliminated prevailing again at DRTSS.”
Chilima therefore said he has since implored DRTSS to ensure that the system hand overs from the consultant to the department are expedited and completed by September, 2020.
Among others, the post also read that he has asked the department to prioritise establishing a special Vehicle Inspection Service Bay for trucks and buses to ensure that revenue from this service does not fall through the cracks.
In one of his campaign rallies during the 2019 tripartite election, Chilima expressed optimism that the country has a possibility of introducing bullet trains as one way of improving mode of transportation.
