In an effort to reduce road Traffic accidents which are rampant along the M1 road, Chileka Police Traffic personnel have intensified patrols on the stretch of Kameza roundabout to Zalewa roadblock.
The initiative follows a series of road accidents that have rocked the area in the recent past days.
Among other interventions during the patrols, all vehicles and motorcycles which are unroadworthy are being impounded and kept at the station so that the owners must comply with the road traffic rules.
According to the Station Traffic Officer, Julius Phiri, after implementation, the initiative will reduce road traffic accidents by fifty percent (50%) or more, because most motorists will be forced to continue complying with the traffic rules and regulations.
Road accidents are increasingly registered in Chileka area following increased number of motorists that drive without observing traffic regulations along the M1 road especially at night.
Some of the bad driving practices which are fueling an increase in road accidents in the area include: driving whilst drunk, over speeding, careless overtakes and failing to fasten seat belt.
Over 30 motor vehicles have been impounded already and the exercise is ongoing.
