[13/08, 16:05] Jones Nyonyoba: Muslims cancel demos
Muslim faithfuls in the country have called off demonstrations they wanted to hold tomorrow Friday.
The protests were meant to express displeasure with a removed billboard erected in Blantyre that was in promotion of the holy Quran.
“We would like to inform all that the planned protest that was slated Friday, August 14, has been put on hold until further notice.
This is so following mediation talks that happened today between Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM), the Blantyre City Council (BCC) and us the organizers,” reads a statement that has been approved by Abdus-Salaam Faduweck.
The statement further said at its briefest, it has been resolved that the billboard be replaced, failing which, the demos will to take place.
Recently, Muslims erected a billboard that read “If you have read the Old Testament and the New Testament, now read the Last Testament: the Quran”.
The message was deemed provocative by some Christian quarters who protested against it.
Later, the Blantyre City Council removed it, an action that angered the Muslims.
Meanwhile, a new billboard baring a different message has been replaced.
