Gossip: Mtambo to contest on MCP ticket in Karonga Central of late MP Mwalwanda

There is a rumour going round that Minister of Civic Education Timothy Mtambo will contest on MCP ticket in Karonga Central by elections.

The constituency belonged to late Dr Cornelius Mwalwanda who defeated Frank Mwenefumbo in 2019 parliamentary elections but later died of Covid-19.

However, speaking to Akometsi.com, Negracious Justin, CFT Spokesperson dispelled the rumours saying Mtambo is not contesting.

“He is not standing on MCP ticket. He is not standing on CFT ticket. In fact, he is not standing at all. Be informed that he is from Chitipa and not Karonga and that there is no by-election in Chitipa, but Karonga,” he said.

Making headlines – Mtambo

Akometsi.com also understands that one of Mtambo’s parents comes from Karonga. Negracious confirmed this but pointed out that its not Karonga Central.

Reacting to the gossip, MCP Deputy Publicity Secretary Ezekiel Ching’oma said MCP candidates are identified through primaries, not social media.

“I just read about this on social media. As MCP, what we do in these circumstances is to conduct primary elections to let the members chose who to represent them in the area and that’s when we get to know the candidate. We would welcome Hon Mtambo, but it would all depend on the people in the constituency” he said.
